On a visit to Washington this month, Chinese Gen. Chen Bingde, chief of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) General Staff, confirmed what Asahi Shimbun and the Financial Times reported last December: China, he said, has officially committed itself to deploying aircraft-carrier task forces, a program that has evidently been under way since 2009. A Soviet flattop called Varyag, refitted and reportedly rechristened Shi Lang, may take to China's "near seas" for sea trials sometime around July 1. Whenever it takes place, the maiden cruise of the Varyag will mark a milestone in China's return to great power.

BEIJING, July 22 (UPI) -- China has launched its largest amphibious dock landing warship, the 19,000 metric ton Jinggangshan, in Shanghai.
The 689-foot-long warship can carry 1,000 soldiers, helicopters, armored fighting vehicles, boats and landing craft, a report in the China Daily said.
The vessel is the second Type 071 dock landing ship built by Shanghai's Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.

Experten schließen in ersten Analysen auf eine Tauchverdrängung von 3.000 bis 4.000 ts (YUAN 2.500 – 3.000 ts), wobei der größere Rumpf wahrscheinlich einen außenluft-unabhängigen Antrieb aufnimmt. Unbestätigten Berichten zufolge haben die Chinesen auf der Basis des Stirling Antriebs einen „eigenen“ AIP entwickelt.
Zur möglichen Einsatzrolle des in Internetforen (noch mit Fragezeichen) als QING-Klasse bezeichneten Neubaus gehen die Meinungen weit auseinander. Einige Analysen sehen allein in der Größe des Bootes schon einen Hinweis auf Operationen im offenen Pazifik „außerhalb der First Island Chain“. Nachvollziehbarer sind da schon Schlussfolgerungen, die aus näherer Betrachtung des Turms gezogen werden. Dieser ist deutlich größer als bei allen anderen konventionellen chinesischen U-Booten. In einem „First“ bei der chinesischen Marine nimmt er hinter den Ausfahrgeräten eine Rettungskapsel auf, die der Besatzung im Notfall ein Aussteigen auch aus größerer Tiefe erlaubt. Dahinter befindet sich dann allerdings noch ausreichend Platz für Waffen wie z.B. senkrecht startende Flugkörper. Dabei könne es sich – so Fachmedien – um Seeziel-FK C-705 oder Marschflugkörper handeln.
Möglich sei aber auch die Aufnahme ballistischer Flugkörper. Hier gehen Überlegungen dahin, dass QING das noch aus den 1960-er Jahren stammende, einzige U-Boot der GOLF-Klasse als Erprobungsplattform für neue ballistische Flugkörper ergänzen oder ablösen soll. Einige wenige Analysen sehen QING schließlich als Träger einer navalisierten Variante des neuen als „Carrier-Killer“ titulierten ballistischen Seeziel-FK DF-21. Welche der zahlreichen mit dem neuen chinesischen U-Boot verbundenen Vermutungen nun zutrifft, muss die Zukunft zeigen. Die chinesische Marine hält sich mit offiziellen Angaben zu ihrem Neubau wie üblich sehr zurück.
