Zu Rosch Haschana - dem jüdischen Neujahrsfest. das heute mit dem Sonnenuntergang beginnt und mit Einbruch der Dunkelheit am 24. September endet, hätte ich den jüdischen Bewohnern Israels etwas besseres gewünscht, als die selbst verursachte zunehmende Isolierung in der Völkergemeinschaft.
Aber vielleicht helfen die folgenden 10 Bußtage ja etwas ...

What would happen if, mid-performance at Madison Square Garden, a pop star began asking God to forgive them and the audience for their sins? I think it’s fair to say that a few people in the crowd would be confused, to say the least.

In Israel, however, Judaism is infused in the national culture — even for those who wouldn’t identify as religious in the traditional sense of the word.

Few moments have captured this cultural intertwining as beautifully as a recent Osher Cohen concert. Cohen, who does not wear a yarmulke, was singing one of his breakup songs — par for the course for a pop star.

And then, without warning, he broke into Adon HaSelichot (Master of Forgiveness) a liturgical poem sung in the lead up to the Jewish New Year, which praises God’s many aspects while asking for forgiveness for our sins.

And how did the audience, which was by no means a religious crowd, respond? They sang along with Cohen as if it was one of his hit songs.

And in that moment, it wasn’t just a concert — it was a reminder of what makes Israel unique: a place where tradition and modern life blend so seamlessly that even a centuries-old prayer can turn into a pop song loved by the religious and secular alike.

Vermutlich sagen die sich mittlerweile einfach: Besser isoliert als tot.

Vor allen Dingen, wer würde ernsthaft die Alternative wählen?

Jews: As we mark a new year, we should remember that the past year has arguably been the best year for the Jews for thousands of years.

Tens of thousands of our bloodthirsty enemies—spread from Yemen to Mashhad, to Doha, to Beirut—have been neutralized as they tried to kill us. So many of their leaders are gone forever. It is not nice, even disturbing, to watch people who want us dead speak on the most powerful platforms in the world, yet we must remember that this is the tiniest taste of what our grandparents experienced, in the same way October 7 was only a tiny taste of what they saw in their lifetimes.

Our enemies have failed totally. All their evil plans have been turned against them. Or, as the mawkish Hezbollah fans say, “They died on the road to Jerusalem.”

In this spirit, I took a drive out along the road to Jerusalem, to the border of the newly UK-recognized State of Palestine. I wanted to be the first to see Starmer and Macron’s new Sykes-Picot plan in action—colonialism in our time. What had once been rock-strewn wasteland is now vineyards as far as the eye can see. And yet, surprisingly, everything seems the same today. There are still Jews everywhere—indeed, in the 24 hours that have passed, another 500 have been born.

We have so much to be thankful for. Happy Jew Year. May it be an even better year. A year of victory and peace.
