Ein aktuell gemeldeter Zwischenfall im Südchinesischen Meer steht sicher nicht in Zusammenhang mit der ADIZ, ist aber doch für die zunehmenden Spannungen mit China kennzeichnend. Dort hatte (schon am 5. Dezember) ein chinesisches Kriegsschiff den US-Kreuzer COWPENS abgedrängt, zu - so Medien - einer „Notbremsung“ gezwungen. Der Kreuzer hatte (vermutlich in einem zuvor von den Chinesen offiziell angemeldeten Warngebiet vor Hainan) Erprobungen des chinesischen Flugzeugträgers LIAONING beobachtet und war den Chinesen dabei „zu nahe“ gekommen.
Überbewerten sollte man diesen Zwischenfall nicht. Auch die US Navy dürfte ähnlich robust reagieren, falls chinesische Einheiten sich einem ihrer Flugzeugträger bei Flugbetrieb zu dicht annähern.

Besonderes Augenmerk findet die ADIZ inzwischen auch in Südostasien, mehren sich doch Gerüchte über die geplante Einrichtung einer solchen Zone auch über dem Südchinesischen Meer. Schon mal im Vorgriff auf einen möglichen solchen Schritt, thematisiert Japan das chinesische Verhalten auf dem am 13. Dezember in Tokio begonnenen Gipfeltreffen Japans mit den Staaten der ASEAN-Gemeinschaft. Auch der strategische Rivale Indien zeigt sich aufgeschreckt. Man beobachte die Entwicklung „sehr aufmerksam“. Indien hat durch eine Partnerschaft mit Vietnam zur Ausbeutung von Energievorkommen im Südchinesischen Meer erhebliches „strategisches Interesse“ an der Region.
