CHINA (Territorial Disputes)
  • With Philippines: Chinese Foreign Ministry: “China will never accept the Philippines' illegal seizure of the Ren'ai Reef … over which China has indisputable sovereignty”
    (rmks: The Philippines in 1999 established a permanent presence/infrastructure by grounding an older landing ship at the reef)

    With Japan / Philippines: Philippine navy commander VAdm Alano in Tokyo … met Japanese defense minister Onodera … discussed implications of recent Chinese increase in maritime activity … agreed “to stand together against any unilateral expression of force that threatens the status quo in the East and South China Seas.”

USA – PHILIPPINES
CARAT 2013: The Philippine phase of this year’s Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (Carat) kicked off … Philippines claim activities will focus on Panatag Shoal, an area in the South China Sea contested by the Philippines and China … Philippines to contribute HAMILTON class patrol frigate GREGORIO DEL PILAR, coast guard patrol vessel EDSA (SARV-002), aircraft, divers and special forces personnel … the US Navy Task Group Carat for this phase includes destroyer FITZGERALD and salvage vessel SAFEGUARD.
(rmks: Panatag shoal currently is de facto controlled by China, and I wonder whether the US Navy will really join in a Philippine “sovereignty demonstration”)

@Erich

New nadir for China-Philippine ties
By Richard Javad Heydarian

MANILA - As the Philippines prepares for a new defense agreement to enable an expanded US "rotational" military presence on its soil, bilateral relations with China have taken a turn for the worse. Amid uncertainties over a diplomatic resolution of territorial disputes in the South China Sea, there is growing worry over how deteriorating Philippine-China relations could escalate.
