ASLAN and ZMA-X UGVs developed by ASELSAN participated in the Kars Winter Exercise 2025, which the Turkish Army conducted in harsh climate conditions.

ASELSAN shared images of the two UGVs used in the Kars Winter Exercise, conducted at sub-zero temperatures.

ASLAN is ASELSAN’s Medium-1 class UGV with an electrical drive for various applications. These include patrol, fire support for troopers, and logistics support. The UGV can be fitted with SARP-L RCWS and/or METE 40 mm laser-guided missiles for combat duties. The sensors include fixed cameras, LIDAR, and mast-mounted EO/IR.

Spanish news outlet “La Razón” has recently unveiled how Turkiye would acquire Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. The article reads, “ Turkiye intends to buy 40 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft in two stages: an initial batch of 20 from the United Kingdom, followed by 20 freshly manufactured planes. The first deliveries are scheduled for 2026, with full operating capabilities projected by 2030.”



However, the report suggests that the 40 aircraft will consist of Tranche 1 and Tranche 4 configurations. This contradicts Turkiye’s stated expectations, which focus on acquiring Tranche 4 and potentially Tranche 5 aircraft.

The most striking detail in the report is the proposal to transfer 20 second-hand aircraft from the Royal Air Force (RAF) inventory to the Turkish Air Force. This implies the inclusion of Eurofighter Tranche 1 jets, which conflicts with several previously known statements.

Der kleine Satz des türkischen Präsidenten Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wird in Griechenland nicht unbemerkt geblieben sein. Am 7. Februar sagte er nach einem Telefongespräch mit seinem französischen Amtskollegen Emmanuel Macron über die Entscheidung der Europäischen Union, die Sanktionen gegen Syrien auszusetzen, dass die „Intensivierung des Dialogs“ zwischen Frankreich und der Türkei „einen positiven Beitrag zu den Beziehungen“ zwischen den beiden Ländern leisten werde, die „ein Potenzial für die Zusammenarbeit in vielen Bereichen, insbesondere in der Verteidigungsindustrie“ hätten.

In den letzten Jahren hat das Schießen zwischen Paris und Ankara die wenigen Rüstungsprojekte, die beide Hauptstädte in Angriff nehmen wollten, insbesondere im Bereich der Luftverteidigung, zum Erliegen gebracht. Da Frankreich und die Türkei jedoch ein Interesse daran haben, den Dialog wieder aufzunehmen, plädierte ein Bericht des Senats kürzlich für eine Wiederbelebung der bilateralen militärischen Zusammenarbeit, einschließlich der industriellen Zusammenarbeit.

Athen erinnerte daran zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem die Türkei versucht, Luft-Luft-Raketen mit großer Reichweite zu beschaffen, um die 40 Eurofighter EF-2000 / Typhoon Kampfflugzeuge zu bewaffnen, über deren Kauf sie mit dem Vereinigten Königreich verhandelt.

Während Spanien, Deutschland und Italien a priori keine Einwände haben, ist dies bei Schweden und vor allem bei Frankreich nicht der Fall. Zumindest theoretisch... Denn es gibt Gerüchte, dass Frankreich schließlich nachgegeben hat. Dies führte dazu, dass die französische Botschafterin in Griechenland, Frau Laurence Auer, von Nikos Dendias, dem griechischen Verteidigungsminister, einbestellt wurde.

Bei dieser Gelegenheit bat Herr Dendias um eine „offizielle Erklärung“ zu den „Informationen über den Verkauf von Meteor-Raketen an die Türkei durch ein Konsortium, an dem Frankreich beteiligt ist“ und teilte mit, dass Griechenland „eine solche Perspektive entschieden ablehnt“, da sie „nicht im Einklang“ mit der französisch-griechischen strategischen Partnerschaft stünde.
Bei einem informellen Treffen der Staats- und Regierungschefs der Mitgliedstaaten der Europäischen Union [EU] am 3. Februar in Brüssel sprach der griechische Ministerpräsident Kyriakos Mitsotakis diese Frage mit Herrn Macron an.

„Herr Mitsotakis fragte nach Details über die laufenden Verhandlungen zwischen der Türkei und dem europäischen Raketenkonsortium MBDA, die unter der Vermittlung des Vereinigten Königreichs geführt werden“, berichtete die griechische Tageszeitung I Kathemirini am 8. Februar.

Der Zeitung zufolge bestätigte Herr Macron die Gespräche und betonte, dass „noch keine endgültige Vereinbarung mit der Türkei getroffen wurde“ und dass eine „Vereinbarung mit der Türkei nicht als selbstverständlich angesehen werden sollte“.
Zwei Tage zuvor hatten „französische diplomatische Quellen“ der gleichen Zeitung versichert, dass Frankreich seine strategische Partnerschaft mit Griechenland „stärken“ wolle.

The Turkish Armed Forces conducted Winter Exercise 2025 in Kars to evaluate operational readiness under harsh winter conditions. The exercise featured various newly developed indigenous weapons and systems.
The tested equipment were the NEFER turret-equipped Armoured Combat Vehicle, the Lightweight Infantry Rifle (MPT-76), the 5.56mm Light Machine Gun, and the Dragoneye-2 Thermal Camera.
Additionally, the exercise included the Cage-Protected Mini UAV, BOYGA Rotary-Wing UAV, and the ASLAN-3 and BARKAN Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs).
The MİLKED-3A3 Electronic Support System and UMA Reconnaissance and Surveillance System were deployed in the electronic warfare domain.

Turkiye’s first indigenous beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, Gökdoğan, successfully struck a target drone with pinpoint accuracy during a test firing.

Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır shared footage of the missile test on his social media account, stating, “Our country’s first indigenous beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, Gökdoğan, directly hit the target aircraft during the test firing. A National Technology Initiative for a fully independent Turkiye in critical technologies.” The date stamp in the footage indicated that the test was conducted on 10 February 2025.
Secretary of Defence Industries (SSB) Haluk Görgün also retweeted Kacır’s post, emphasising the importance of air-to-air missile capability for air superiority and deterrence. Görgün stated, “Gökdoğan is a strategic step that strengthens our national capabilities in this field. I congratulate all our institutions, engineers, and industry partners, especially TÜBİTAK SAGE, for this achievement. Strong R&D, strong cooperation, strong Turkiye."

French Minister of Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu has officially stated that France will not intervene in Türkiye’s Meteor missile acquisition, contrary to Greece’s expectations.

Lecornu answered a question about selling Meteor missiles to Türkiye at a session of the French Parliament’s (Assemblée Nationale) Defence Committee on February 18, 2025. Although he admitted Greece had asked France to stop the transaction, he underlined the issue was beyond France’s hands.

We do not control British arms exports. Do we have a role in this matter? No. We are not the ones selling the platform to Türkiye,” Lecornu stated.

Emphasising France’s own national interests, the minister further summed up this position as, “France is always on the right side—on the side of the French people.” “I believe we have no alternative but to use diplomacy, persuasion, and above all, find a way for everyone to engage in dialogue to reach a solution,” he said, suggesting Greece has no option but to accept the circumstances. "I will visit Athens shortly to review all these issues with my Greek colleague.”

Turkish Secretariat of Defence Industries (SSB) awarded New Generation Armoured Vehicles (NGAV) orders to FNSS for Turkish Land Forces (TLF). The order includes serial production of 6x6 and 8x8 New Generation PARS ALPHA Armoured Vehicle configurations for the TLF Mechanised Armoured Units. In the program’s first phase, FNSS will deliver PARS ALPHA 8x8 Anti-Armour Squad and Armoured Recovery variants. In the scope of the program, FNSS will also produce 6x6 variants. PARS ALPHA 6x6 command post variants will be configured with advanced mission equipment.

FNSS PARS ALPHA 8x8 prototype successfully emerged from an intensive competition environment. The program was awarded after comprehensive field tests by SSB and Turkish MOD.

ALTAY Main Battle Tank Delivery Schedule Announced
Haluk Görgün, the Secretary of Defence Industries, has revealed the delivery timetable for serial manufacturing of ALTAY, the next-generation MBT for Türkiye,

The statement states that three tanks for the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) will arrive in 2025, 11 in 2026, 41 in 2027, and 30 in 2028.
Speaking at BMC's facilities in Ankara, Görgün affirmed that confirming Türkiye's dedication to modernising its armoured capabilities, an extra 165 tanks will be delivered in the next years.



T1 vs T2 Versions
TurDef anticipates that the initial batch of three ALTAY T1 tanks will be produced at the Sakarya Tank Pallet Factory, as was the case with the previous two prototypes already delivered to the TSK. Future tanks, particularly those produced at the Ankara Aerospace and Defence Industrial Zone (HAB), are expected to be of the T2 configuration.

The Turkish Air Force (TurAF) returns to the multinational Red Flag Exercise at Nevada Air Base. Turkish Force Command dispatched F-16 fighter planes to participate in the second exercise, which will last two weeks and take place in 2025.

Turkish-US bilateral relations tend to return to previous days, and military cooperation follows this trend. Reflecting this leaning, five F-16 fighters from the 132nd “Hançer” (Dagger) Squadron of the 3rd Main Jet Base Command departed for the US accompanied by two KC-135R aerial refuelling aircraft and an Airbus A400M transport aircraft. The Turkish fleet made a technical stop in Portugal before crossing the Atlantic and landing at Prestwick, Goose Bay, Canada.

This year’s multinational exercise at Nellis included the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) and the United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAEAF) alongside TurAF and the host USAF. Saudi Arabia flies F-15S and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft; the UAEAF supplies F-16 fighters and A330 MRTT tankers.

Initiated by the USAF in 1975, Red Flag activities seek to improve ally combat preparedness and interoperability. Blue and Red Forces are formed from participants to reproduce realistic combat situations meant to test, assess, and improve tactical capabilities in almost real-time settings.

Türkiye has received a response to its request for a price proposal from the United Kingdom and BAE Systems for the procurement of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.
Responding to inquiries regarding the Eurofighter procurement process, sources from the Ministry of National Defence (MoD) stated:
“We previously announced that the Requirement Definition Document for the procurement of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft to meet the operational needs of our Air Force was submitted to the UK Ministry of Defence and the relevant company and that we were expecting an offer. The anticipated proposal has now reached our Ministry, and the evaluation process is ongoing.”

Turkey has begun using tablet computers in the cockpits of its F-16 fighters to help with the rapid integration of new locally-developed weapons. This has interesting parallels with Ukraine’s use of such devices to allow its Soviet-era jets to employ Western air-to-ground weapons — something you can read more about here.

The tablet can be seen in the cockpit of an F-16 in a recent video showing a test launch of the domestically developed SOM-J standoff missile. The tablet is mounted on the Input Control Panel (ICP), which is located on the center console beneath the head-up display. The ICP is used to select weapons, navigation settings, and radio communications, among other functions. At the same time, the pilot has another tablet on their knee, something that has become increasingly common, augmenting the information available via the aircraft’s mission systems and helping eliminate cumbersome paper books in the cockpit.

Berlin cites concerns the opposition mayor’s arrest as reasons for Eurofighter veto, but international relations might play a role behind closed doors.

Germany has reportedly vetoed the planned export of Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Turkiye, citing democratic concerns and the arrest of Istanbul’s opposition mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu. According to a report by the German daily Handelsblatt, the caretaker federal government, currently led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz in an acting capacity, blocked the delivery of approximately three dozen fighter jets (TurDef’s note Turkiye wants 40 jets), despite the United Kingdom’s readiness to proceed with the deal.



The move is perceived as a direct response to what Berlin describes as “serious violations of democratic principles” in Turkiye. According to German government sources, a major factor in the choice to deny the export permit was İmamoğlu's arrest on corruption allegations. Opposition parties claim that İmamoğlu's arrest is part of a larger effort to stifle dissent before elections, given his status as a major contender to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

During a visit to Istanbul in October 2024, Chancellor Scholz had defended Eurofighter exports to Turkiye by saying, "Turkiye is a member of NATO, and that is why we repeatedly make decisions that lead to concrete deliveries." Recent events, nevertheless, seem to have changed Berlin's stance.

The briefing is included in footage of Yaşar Güler’s visit to the newly opened Air and Missile Defence Simulator Centre in Air Technical Schools Command in İzmir, where the Minister of Defence inspected the air defence systems. It is understood from the number of firing tests that the system was tested in different scenarios.

Secretary of Turkish Defence Industries Haluk Görgün announced the entry of the Siper Product-1 long-range air defence system into the inventory in October 2024. The deal for production was signed towards the end of 2023.

Turkish defence officials assert that Germany's declared resistance to Eurofighter Typhoon transfers to Turkiye has no impact on the present acquisition talks.

Reports that Germany is stopping Turkiye from buying more than 30 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets have been dismissed by the Turkish Ministry of National Defence (MoD).

Reportedly driven by human rights and democratic backsliding worries, the problem has arisen against increasing political tension between Berlin and Ankara. German media have linked the choice to Ekrem İmamoğlu, the opposition leader and present mayor of Istanbul.

German outlet “Handelsblatt” reported that the coalition government of the Social Democrats and the Greens had decided to halt the sale due to Türkiye’s domestic political climate. The paper noted that the decision came during the outgoing administration’s final days in office. The German government has not denied the report.
