Mladen Ivanic: "Deployment of BiH Soldiers Could be Beneficial for World Crisis Zones"
Tuesday, the BiH Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mladen Ivanic, assessed a potential engagement of BiH soldiers "as beneficial for calming the situation in crisis spots" in response to some predictions and the announcement that BiH armed forces could be sent to Iraq. "The official decision has not been made yet, but some consideration was given to the idea of an offer for BiH participation in the peace keeping unit in Iraq." However, Ivanic remarked that this was a complex issue considering the fact that BiH had a transport unit ready, but given the security conditions in Iraq the unit should be backed up "by a platoon prepared for combat situations, which in turn calls for more serious preparations." Ivanic concluded that "it would be useful for BiH to show that it has undergone a transformation from a country that was once an object of peace-keeping missions into an active participant in a peace-keeping operation." Final Decision on Sending BiH troops to Iraq Rests with BiH Presidency
The Secretary General of the Standing Committee on Military Matters (SCMM), Enes Becirbasic stated that the Committee has been tasked with examining the possibility and methods for deployment of BiH soldiers in Iraq as part of the peace-keeping mission. "If the analysis shows that all the conditions for sending our troops to Iraq have been met, we will send one Transport Unit composed of one Company of the RS Army and two companies of the F BiH Army", stated Becirbasic. The F BiH Prime Minister, Niko Lozancic said he didn't see any reasons why this shouldn't happen since even "the reform of the BiH defense system anticipates a formation of such one military unit for peace-keeping operations". Lozancic explained that this proposal will be reviewed in the session of the SCMM and the BiH Presidency, which will have the final say on the matter. However, given the growing number of incidents in Iraq, the BiH Presidency members will have a tough decision to make on whether or not to send their soldiers for the first time to a military peace-keeping operation, since until now, BiH soldiers have only been involved as military observers in missions in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Congo.
