President Vladimir Putin has signed a resolution ordering Russian troops to join a proposed U.N. peacekeeping operation in Sudan.
The resolution calls for Russia to send Interior Ministry forces, which have both police and military-type units, the Associated Press reported, citing the Kremlin.
There were no reports on precisely what type of forces would be sent.
Sudan’s government and rebels in the south signed a peace deal on Jan. 9 to end the African nation’s long-running civil war, setting up a national power-sharing administration with an autonomous south.
Russia has been accused in the past of sending military equipment such as helicopters to Sudan, aiding the government-backed troops that are accused by international observers of war crimes in the Darfur region.
