NZ base in southern Iraq attacked

Auckland, June 14 - Several soldiers were believed to have been wounded when a military base housing New Zealand and British forces in southern Iraq came under mortar attack Monday, a New Zealand defence official said here.

Iraqi police escapes assassination

Baghdad, June 13 - A senior Iraqi police officer was shot and wounded during an assassination attempt, he said on Sunday.

General Majid Almani Mahal, commander of Atraf police station in Baquba, was attacked late Saturday as he drove through a suburb of the city 60 kilometres north-east of Baghdad.

"I have escaped from an assassination attempt," he said.

"A group of armed people in a small car shot me."

The attack took place near an industrial neighbourhood five kilometres south of Baquba at about 8:00 PM on Saturday, Mahal said.

Najaf, June 12 - Three people were killed and seven others wounded Saturday when insurgents tried, but failed, to control Ghiri police station in downtown Najaf.

Najaf Governor Adnan Al-Hafnawi said one police and two insurgents were killed in the attack. Four policemen and three insurgents were wounded. ...
