Malaysia's Ministry of Home Affairs has signed a contract with Türkiye's Desan Shipyard to construct a multi-purpose mission ship (MPMS) for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). The contract was signed on 20 May at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) Exhibition 2025 held in Malaysia, and follows a letter of agreement announced in March. The MMEA, also referred to as the Malaysia Coast Guard, will likely operate the vessel in the South China Sea.
A spokesperson for the company told Janes that construction of the MPMS started in Türkiye in March. The contract, the value of which was not disclosed, calls for the shipbuilder to deliver the vessel to the MMEA within 24 months. [...]
While details about its weaponry and sensors have not yet been revealed, the MPMS is expected to be equipped with a 30 mm main gun at its bow and two 20 mm guns mounted above the helicopter deck. It primary sensors will include one air search radar and two navigational radars. The MPMS has a length of 99 m, a beam of 17 m, and a draught of 4 m. It is capable of achieving speeds of more than 20 kt and is estimated to have an endurance of 30 days.
According to Desan Shipyard, the vessel can accommodate a crew of 70 and an additional 30 embarked personnel. It can operate two vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
