Algeria becomes launch export customer for Russia's Su-57, national media says

Algeria is to be the launch export customer for Russia's Sukhoi Su-57 ‘Felon' combat aircraft, Algerian national media announced on 11 February.

Algerian media reported that up to 14 examples of the Su-57E export version of the ‘fifth-generation' fighter had been acquired, seemingly firming up Russian pronouncements in 2024 that a first buyer had been secured. The Algerian Ministry of National Defense (MND) had not responded to Janes request for confirmation and further information at the time of publication.

As noted by Janes World Air Forces, the Algerian Air Force is a traditional customer of Russian (and prior to that, Soviet Union) combat aircraft types, now fielding MiG-25 ‘Foxbat', Sukhoi Su‐30 ‘Flanker', MiG-29 ‘Fulcrum' fighters, and Sukhoi Su-24 ‘Fencer' aircraft. The acquisition of the latest Su-57 would represent an uptick in its capabilities and could have an effect on the wider balance of power within the North African region.
