A court in Bahrain has ruled that three policemen accused of killing three people during pro-democracy protests last year should be tried for murder. They were originally facing the lesser charge of manslaughter and could now be sentenced to death if convicted, the Information Affairs Authority said.
Post-mortem examinations last year found the victims had been shot at close range, a rights commission said. A fourth policeman was also sentenced in absentia to five years in prison. He was found guilty of assault after having wounded a protester by firing birdshot at them, the IAA said, adding that the officer himself was in hospital after suffering severe injuries in a bomb attack two months ago.
Das ist schon eine recht interessante Entwicklung. Natürlich ist das Land damit noch keine Demokratie, aber beim bisherigen gezielten Bahrain-Bashing durch gewisse Kreise sei auch daran erinnert, dass z. B. in den meisten anderen Ländern, in denen es Proteste und Opfer gab, niemand von den verantwortlichen Sicherheitskräften belangt wurde. Im Iran 2009 wurden Dutzende Leute (70+) bei den Wahlprotesten umgebracht, aber kein Polizist oder Gardist zur Rechenschaft gezogen...
