White House to seek 7pc more in military spending

The Bush Administration will ask US Congress to approve a 7 per cent increase in military spending to $US401.7 billion for fiscal 2005, Government officials said.

The proposal for the year beginning next October 1, part of a $US2.3 trillion budget to be sent to lawmakers by President George W Bush, compares to US military spending this year of about $US375 billion, the officials, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters.

The military spending figures do not include money that is allocated to the US Energy Department each year for upkeep and safety of the nation's nuclear arsenal.

The $US401.7 billion also does not include up to $US40 billion in additional supplemental spending for military operations in Iraq which Congressional sources and budget analysts told Reuters that the Bush administration is expected to ask Congress to provide late this year or early next year.

US defence officials provided no details on the request for $US26 billion in additional defence spending next year, but stressed that the cost of fighting the US-declared 'war on terrorism' was high.

Die Ausgaben für das Militär sollen im kommenden Jahr in den USA kräftig steigen. Präsident George W. Bush legte nun den Etat vor. Noch aber steht die Zustimmung des Kongresses aus.

Washington - Gleich um sieben Prozent wird der Militäretat im Haushaltsjahr 2005 steigen. Die Regierung von US-Präsident George W. Bush werde den Kongress um Zustimmung zu einer Erhöhung der Ausgaben auf 401,7 Milliarden Dollar von derzeit rund 375 Milliarden Dollar bitten, teilte das US-Verteidigungsministerium mit. Bis zum Jahr 2009 sollen sie auf 487,7 Milliarden Dollar ansteigen.
Die geplante Erhöhung im nächsten Jahr spiegele die anhaltende Verpflichtung des Präsidenten wider, Krieg und Terror zu bekämpfen und sei erforderlich, um den Zielen für die nationale Sicherheit gerecht zu werden, teilte das Ministerium mit.
