Zitat:E-2D units will command future UCLASS fleet
The US Navy has decided to embed its future unmanned surveillance and strike aircraft in the same air wing that operates the Northrop Grumman E-2C/D, an airborne command and control platform.
The decision settles a philosophical debate within the navy over who should have command over the unmanned carrier launched airborne surveillance and strike (UCLASS) aircraft during operations.
Options under review as late as August included operating UCLASS aircraft as a standalone unit, as a detachment to a wing of Lockheed Martin F-35C fighters or as a detachment to a wing that includes the E-2C/D.
Naval officials quietly announced their decision in a little-noticed directive released last month. That notice, dated 18 December, says a new UCLASS unit called the “fleet introduction team” will be established on 1 October.
The notice also says the first UCLASS unit will be a detachment to the airborne command and control logistics wing on board the carrier. That wing includes the E-2C and E-2D, a fleet that monitors airspace for hostile aircraft and missiles and directs the carrier’s strike aircraft in air combat.
The directive confirms that the navy has decided to assign the UCLASS fleet to the commander of the E-2 unit on board the carrier, a Naval Air Systems command (NAVAIR) spokeswoman tells Flightglobal.
The navy, however, has not settled on the details of how future E-2 crews will operate alongside the UCLASS fleet......

US NAVAIR orders three Blackjack UAV systems
nsitu has been awarded a contract worth some $42 million to provide three RQ-21A Blackjack unmanned air vehicle systems to the US Navy Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR).
Awarded on 18 December and announced on 5 January, the Low-Rate Initial Production Lot 3 contract for the three systems comes under the USN’s fiscal year 2014 budget. Each system consists of five air vehicles, two ground control stations, payloads and a launch and recovery system.
A further three LRIP systems are expected to be delivered under the USN’s FY2015 budget, which the Department of Defense estimates will be valued at some $70.5 million, ahead of an expected full rate production contract in the future. One RQ-21A system was ordered in FY2013.....

Zitat:US border agency halts UAS fleet expansion plans
The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency no longer plans to acquire 14 more medium altitude unmanned air systems and faces stinging new criticisms about the effectiveness of the current fleet of 10 aircraft.
The agency’s fleet – comprised of unarmed land and maritime surveillance versions of the General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Predator B – are so restricted by budget, operational and weather constraints that the aircraft have completed 22% of planned flight hours, according to the report by the Office of Inspector General (IG).
Moreover, an $8 million sensor – the Northrop Grumman vehicle and dismount and exploitation radar (VADER) – is not being used properly, says the IG report. Although VADER has detected thousands of suspected illegal immigrants after they have crossed the border, it is not being used by the CBP for the strategic purpose of tracing their routes back to where they crossed the border.
As a result, the IG recommends that the CBP invest $443 million on more useful purposes than expanding the UAS fleet to 24 aircraft.
“CBP has invested significant funds in a program that has not achieved the expected results, and it cannot demonstrate how much the program has improved border security,” the report states.
The report also says that the CBP has stated it no longer intends to expand the Predator B fleet, although an approved requirement for the additional aircraft still exits........
