Zitat:TKMS and Babcock are still in the running for the Polish Miecznik program

According to information published by Wojsko Polskie on February 15, 2022, the German firm TKMS and the British company Babcock were selected for the Polish Miecznik program. [...] These multi-purpose units will increase the operational capability to perform tasks at sea, which will contribute to the protection of shipping routes, increase military security and deterrence potential, as well as strengthen the position of Poland in the international arena.

The Coastal Defence Vessel, code name MIECZNIK, is an important component project of the Programme. Its purpose is not unlike that of a traditional multi-purpose corvette, although there will be differences in both the Miecznik’s task priorities and its equipment.

Zitat:Poland Orders Three More Kormoran II MCM Vessels

Poland's Ministry of National Defence (MND) signed a contract on 26 June 2022 for the procurement of three additional Kormoran II mine counter measure (MCM) vessels for the Polish Navy. [...]

The contract value was announced as “less than PLN 2.5 billion gross” ($564 million USD) with vessels set to be delivered in 2026 and 2027.

Three Kormoran II type MCM vessels are already in service with the Polish Navy. They were built by local shipbuilder Remontowa Shipbuilding. The first ship-in-class, ORP Kormoran, was commissioned in November 2017. The contract for the construction of two follow-on units, ORP Albatros and ORP Mewa, was signed at the end of December 2017. ORP Albatros was launched in October 2019 and is currently undergoing military handover tests, while ORP Mewa was launched in December 2020 and is currently at the stage of the contractor’s sea trials. ORP Albatros is set to join the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla in August while ORP Mewa is expected to be handed over in November.

Zitat:New Babcock contracts advance Poland's Miecznik frigate programme

UK-based engineering and services group Babcock has been awarded two new contracts intended to pave the way for in-country build of Poland's Miecznik (Swordfish) frigates to start in 2023.

Babcock – bidding a variant of its Arrowhead 140 design – was selected earlier in 2022 as the platform design provider and technology partner for the three-ship Miecznik programme. Arrowhead 140 forms the basis for the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) new Type 31 frigate.

In a 7 September statement, Babcock said that the class design contract and the transfer of knowledge and skills (TOKAT) framework agreement “respectively support the further development of the programme and the enhancement of shipbuilding capability in Poland to deliver Miecznik to schedule”. All three frigates are to be built in Poland [...].

Zitat:Orka Reactivation – Which Submarines For Poland?

On May 24, Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of National Defense Mariusz Blaszczak announced that the Orka program, which aims to procure submarines for the Polish Navy, will be launched later this year. [...]

The Orka program was first launched in 2014 with the intention of procuring three submarines. At the time, a technical dialogue was held with manufacturers, including: Naval Group (then known as DCNS), thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Saab, Navantia, Nauta with MBDA. However, by 2017 the program didn’t make much progress. The selection of a foreign partner from among three companies was announced for January 2018: DCNS (Scorpène with MBDA NCM/MdCN cruise missiles), tkMS (212CD) and Saab (A26 Blekinge). But such selection never happened. The Polish Navy soon changed its priority to frigates to be built under the Miecznik program. [...]

Large purchases of military equipment from the Republic of Korea t for Polish Armed Forces mean that a new player is on the horizon. So not only Naval Group, tkMS, Saab and Navantia will be invited to bid. The Korean KSS-III class large conventional submarine, equipped with AIP and armed with vertical launchers for cruise missiles and ballistic missiles with conventional payloads, may prove to be an attractive offer for Poland.

Zitat:Miecznik For EUR 3.6 Billion – All Frigates (Fully) Armed

On 12 December, the Armament Agency of Polish Ministry of National Defence and the PGZ-MIECZNIK consortium signed annex 4 to the main contract inked on 27 July 2021, which concerns the design and construction of three Project 106 Miecznik frigates for the Polish Navy. It regulates issues related to the completion of the integrated combat system of the second and third units. [...]

According to the original contract, the prototype Miecznik frigate ORP Wicher was to be equipped with a complete Integrated Combat System, including sensors and effectors specified by the Polish Navy. Most of these systems remained an option for serial frigates. The annex to the contract ensures that the future ORP Burza and ORP Huragan will also receive a similar Integrated Combat System (ZSW in Polish). [...]

The second and third frigates will be armed with, among other things, 76mm Leonardo Super Rapido Strales gun, Lockheed Martin VLS Mk 41 Strike Lenght launcher (32 chambers) with ExLS Host (Extensible Launching System for CAMM missiles), MBDA UK Sea Ceptor anti-aircraft and anti-missle system with CAMM and CAMM-ER missiles, Thales Sea Master SM410 (with four AESA fixed antennas) and NS50 (with AESA rotating antenna) radar systems, Thales Artemis IRST systems (InfraRed Search andr Track), Saab NLWS (Naval Laser Warning System), as well as electronic warfare, defence systems and IFF identification systems. [...]

Furthermore, as mentioned, retrofitting concerns air defence and anti-surface combat systems. This means that perhaps Thales CAPTAS-2 towed sonars and some other equipment (torpedo tubes etc.) will remain as options. The announcement also does not mention about the RBS-15 Mk3+ anti-ship missiles, and other systems.

Oh, Strales!
