Eigentlich war die Übergabe bereits zum 25. November geplant, aber die Feier musste verschoben werden, weil der als Ehrengast unverzichtbare Bruder des marokkanischen Königs kurzfristig in die USA reisen musste. Etwas mehr als zwei Monate später wurde ein neuer Termin gefunden, und an diesem stand der großen Feier nichts mehr im Wege. In Anwesenheit von Prinz Moulay Rachid und Frankreichs Verteidigungsminister sowie der marokkanischen und französischen Marinebefehlshaber nahm die marokkanische Marine in Brest ihr neues Schiff in Besitz.

Noch führt die MOHAMMED VI am Rumpf die während der unter französischer Flagge durchgeführten Erprobungen gesetzlich vorgeschriebene französische Nummer D-601. In etwa vier Wochen soll der Neubau dann aber nach Marokko verlegen, und spätestens bei der in Casablanca geplanten formellen Indienststellung wird dann auch die dem Schiff zugewiesene (auch schon beim Stapellauf aufgemalte) Seitennummer 701 zu sehen sein.

Die 6.000-ts-Fregatte des französischen Typs FREMM war im Oktober 2007 bei der französischen DCNS bestellt worden; im September 2011 lief sie in Lorient vom Stapel, wurde ausgerüstet und absolvierte dort auch ihre ersten Erprobungen. Die letzten Abnahmefahrten erfolgten dann abgestützt auf Brest, wo der Neubau nun auch übergeben wurde. Die MOHAMMED VI ist in Ausrüstung und Fähigkeiten weitgehend identisch mit den für die französische Marine gebauten, für U-Jagd optimierten Fregatten der AQUITAINE-Klasse. Ihr Bau erfolgte parallel zu drei bei der niederländischen Damen Schelde bestellten Fregatten/Korvetten der SIGMA-Familie, die 2011/12 geliefert wurden.

Die Beschaffung dieser für Hochsee-Operationen optimierten Schiffe wird allgemein als Hinweis auf einen erweiterten Auftrag der marokkanischen Marine verstanden; sie will offenbar der strategischen Lage am Eingang zum Mittelmeer deutlich besser Rechnung tragen als bisher. In diesem Zusammenhang ist auch die 2010 eröffnete neue Marinebasis Qsar es-Sghir zu betrachten, etwa 30km östlich von Tanger der zweite Stützpunkt der marokkanischen Marine am Mittelmeer und an der Straße von Gibraltar.
