J-20 fighters start patrols in East, South China Seas

China's J-20 stealth fighters have started to patrol the East and South China Seas as part of routine training missions, state-owned media reported.

According to the Global Times newspaper, the announcement was made by Ren Yukun, head of the discipline inspection and supervision team and a member of the leading party group at the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). In a press conference on 12 April, Yukun reportedly said that it has become a training routine for Chengdu J-20s to fly “combat patrols” in the East China Sea and “alert patrols” in the South China Sea.

He added that these patrols are being undertaken after the J-20 switched to using “domestically developed engines”.

Ich stelle es mal unter Vorbehalt hier ein, da im Artikel ein Bezug zur J-20 bzw. Shenyang FC-31 hergestellt wird, möglicherweise ist es also eine Ableitung dieses Typs für den Marine-Einsatz, denn die kolportierte Marine-Variante der FC-31 wird von manchen Kommentatoren auch als J-35 bezeichnet (und die ehem. J-XX wurde als J-20 in Dienst genommen, die dann wiederum die Variante FC-31 hervorbrachte):

The official designation of China’s new twin-engine stealth fighter aircraft is not known yet. Most open sources calls it “J-35” or “J-XY), some even calls it a variant of the FC-31.

A full-size model of the stealth plane first appeared in June 2021 at land based testing facility: A full-sized mock-up of a real Chinese Navy aircraft carrier, located at Wuhan. Naval News‘ regular contributor H I Sutton covered at length the development at the time, pointing out the similarities between the aircraft and the FC-31.
