China gives Cambodia nine patrol boats
PHNOM PENH, Oct 25 (AFP) Oct 25, 2007

China has provided Cambodia with nine naval patrol boats to help safeguard projected offshore oil sites and reduce maritime crimes, the defence minister said Thursday.

Expected oil production from undersea reserves has also heightened the need for greater naval security.

But equipment could remain a problem. In 2003, only four of Cambodia's 12 Soviet-built ships were operational.

In 2005, China gave six patrol boats to Cambodia to bolster its ageing fleet, but it is unclear how many ships the country has in the water.

“We started monitoring this facility, at first at a low frequency, maybe once a week, once every couple of weeks. Then as we started to understand the pace of activity at this facility was picking up, we picked up the rate we were doing collection and analytics,” said BlackSky CEO Brian O’Toole, speaking at the conference.
