Zitat:Ethiopia At Crossroads As Drone Attacks Worsen Tigray Crisis

While drone attacks kill dozens of people in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed continues to push for national dialogue to end the conflict. Will his plan succeed? [...]

The [government-imposed] blockade has created "hell and is an insult to our humanity," World Health Organization Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, himself a Tigrayan, told reporters. Stressing that he was speaking from a neutral position, Tedros said the situation was "serious and desperate." The UN said the blockade was preventing millions of people from accessing life-saving medicine. While releasing the Human Rights Watch World Report 2022, Executive Director Kenneth Roth mentioned Ethiopia's Tigray crisis as "a place of concern for the coming year." [...]

On the contrary, airstrikes have intensified in the country's north. This week, at least 17 people were killed in a drone attack. [...] The government denied it was behind the civilian bombings and instead blamed the TPLF for using propaganda to get the international community's attention. "The allegation of government airstrikes in Tigray on civilians is completely false," Legese Tulu, Ethiopia's government communications minister, told DW in an exclusive interview. "How can a government strike its citizens? People in Tigray are our brothers and sisters. The government never targets civilians," Legese added. [...]

Human rights organizations accuse both sides of committing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. [...] "I am shocked by reports that drone attacks on IDP camps in Ethiopia last week resulted in numerous civilian casualties," Luise Amtsberg, Germany's commissioner for human rights policy and humanitarian assistance, told reporters. "These attacks not only cause terrible suffering but also worsen the chances of resolving the conflict." Amtsberg also urged those bearing arms in Tigray to guarantee humanitarian organizations full access to people in need.

Zitat:Ethiopia pledges action after video shows uniformed men burning civilians alive

Nairobi (Reuters) - Ethiopia's government said on Saturday it would act against the perpetrators after a video appeared on social media showing armed men, some in military uniforms, burning civilians to death in the country's west.

The Ethiopia Government Communication Service said in a statement on its Facebook page that the incident occurred in the Ayisid Kebele of Metekel Zone in the Benishangul-Gumuz region, a site of frequent ethnic violence for more than a year in which hundreds of civilians have died. "A horrific and inhumane act was recently committed... In a series of horrific images circulated on social media, innocent civilians were burned to death," the statement read. [...] Military spokesperson Colonel Getnet Adane and government spokesperson Legesse Tulu did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The violence in the Benishangul-Gumuz region, which is home to several ethnic groups, is separate from the war in the northern Tigray region that erupted in November 2020 between Ethiopian federal forces and rebellious forces of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

Zitat:Ethiopia: Tigray rebels agree ‘cessation of hostilities’ after government truce

Tigrayan rebels have agreed to a “cessation of hostilities”, marking a turning point in the nearly 17-month war in northern Ethiopia after the government’s announcement of an indefinite humanitarian truce a day earlier.

The rebels said in a statement sent to AFP they were “committed to implementing a cessation of hostilities effective immediately” and urged Ethiopian authorities to hasten delivery of emergency aid into Tigray [...]. Since war broke out in November 2020, thousands have died, and many more have been forced to flee their homes as the conflict has expanded from Tigray to the neighbouring regions of Amhara and Afar.

On Thursday, Abiy Ahmed’s government declared a surprise truce, saying it hoped the move would ease humanitarian access to Tigray and “pave the way for the resolution of the conflict”. It called on the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) to “desist from all acts of further aggression and withdraw from areas they have occupied in neighbouring regions”. [...] The UN, US, European Union, African Union and China hailed the truce declaration.

Zitat:At least 200 civilians killed in western Ethiopia, say reports and officials

(CNN) - At least 200 civilians are believed to have been killed in Ethiopia's Oromia region by rebel group the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) on Saturday, according to reports, a rights group and local officials. Most of the victims are from the Amhara ethnic group, a police officer said.

The attack on the town of Gimbi was connected to fighting between government forces and the OLA, according to a statement from the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC). The EHRC told [...] that the assault has left "scores of people injured, villages destroyed, and entire communities traumatized." The OLA - which last year aligned with Tigrayan rebel forces against Ethiopia's federal government in the country's protracted conflict - has denied all the allegations. [...]

The rebel group has been designated as a terror organization by the Ethiopian government, and it is frequently accused of attacking civilians and targeting ethnic Amharas. This incident is among the worst atrocities to hit the country since fighting broke out in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region in 2020, when Abiy's government and its allies from the neighboring Amhara region tried to suppress a rebellion by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

Zitat:Ethiopia's Tigray war: Satellite images capture troop build-up near Eritrea border

Satellite images have given a rare glimpse into the resurgence of fighting in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, one of the world's most hidden conflicts, where communications have been cut off and journalists denied permission to visit. The images taken this month show the build-up of troops and military hardware along Ethiopia's border with Eritrea.

They belong to the Ethiopian federal forces and their Eritrean allies who are both fighting the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which controls most of the region. The images taken this month show the build-up of troops and military hardware along Ethiopia's border with Eritrea, which backs Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed against the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the group that controls the region.

Eritrea recently mobilised its reserve forces for a reported offensive in Tigray. Fighting reignited in August after a five-month humanitarian ceasefire broke down. [...]

Zitat:Ethiopia: Two Key Challenges For Lasting Ethiopia, Tigray Peace - Disarmament and Humanitarian Aid

Cape Town — The northern Ethiopian region has been the centre of a battle for control between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) - which led the country's previous government - and the current administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since November 2020.

The conflict has become what World Health Organisation Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus - whose family originated from Tigray - recently described as a health crisis for more than 6 million people, and one 'the world is not paying attention' to. Between 385,000 and 600,000 have been killed since the conflict began with "war rape" being a daily threat for women and girls.

Despite tensions, hope remains for peace after a truce was brokered between the TPLF and the Ethiopian government by South Africa. So said Webster Zambara, senior project leader on the Peacebuilding Interventions Programme at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR). [...]

The toll of the 24-month conflict has left a major impact on the population. "Thousands have died. A million people or more have had to migrate to the United Arab Emirates (UAE)," Zambara said, noting a rapid rise in internally displaced people (IDPs) as well. In the Tigray region, the humanitarian crisis is even more pronounced, according to Zambara, and echo similar concern made by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; the body framed the catastrophic effect on human life by noting that 9 million people across Tigray, along with the Afar and Amhara regions, are in extreme need of food aid.

"The November truce is quite important as another agreement was signed on the implementation of the truce, and this was done in Kenya," he said.
