Iran Unveils New Ground-Based Cruise Missile System

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran unveiled a new long-range ground-to-ground cruise missile system, named 'Soumar', in a ceremony attended by senior military officials and commanders.

"Soumar long-range ground-to-ground cruise missile system has been designed and built by experts of the defense ministry's aerospace industries organization," Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan told reporters after the unveiling ceremony.

"The designing and building of this weapon whose navigation and propulsion systems and its structure enjoy complicated and new technologies is seen as a wide stride taken to enhance the Islamic Republic of Iran's defensive and deterrence power," he added.

Iran's surface-to-surface Sejjil missile, the long-range Shahab-3 ballistic missile which has a range of up to 2,000 km, and Zelzal and Fateh missiles have all been developed by the Aerospace Organization of the Defense Industries.

This is while the solid-fuel, two-stage Sejjil missile with two engines, is capable of reaching a very high altitude and therefore has a longer range than that of the Shahab 3 model.

Zitat:On March 8, the Iranian defense ministry revealed a new strategic cruise missile—the Soumar.

New for Iran, that is. Named after a city destroyed during the Iran-Iraq War, the Soumar is a reverse-engineered copy of the Soviet-made Kh-55 cruise missile. But it’s one of the longest-range weapons Iran has—and comes with a fairly sophisticated guidance system.

Iranian state television recently aired footage from its unveiling ceremony, which depicted a mobile launcher capable of carrying five Soumar missiles.

Zitat:The missile has a maximum range of up to 3,000 kilometers—marking a record for Iranian cruise missiles. If fired from Syria, it could possibly strike targets in southern Italy.

Tehran acquired at least six sample Kh-55s from Ukraine—allegedly through the black market—in 1996 for a price of $4.5 million.

The missile is also capable of carrying nuclear warheads—though Iran doesn’t have any, and doesn’t have the ability to miniaturize nuclear weapons small enough to fit.

Zitat:It’s theoretically possible that Iran could install the Soumar on fighter jets—like the Tomahawk derivatives the U.S. designed to fit on F-16s. The AGM-158 JASSM is the current iteration of these American fighter-launched cruise missiles.

Don’t say Tehran … couldn’t. The Iranian air force has already installed land-attack versions of the Noor missile on its F-14, F-4 and Su-24 fighter jets.

And even with a shorter 2,500-kilometer range—without conformal fuel tanks—the Soumar is still deadly. Iran’s obsolete F-14, Su-24 and F-4 jets could fire their missiles toward an unspecified target in a pre-defined area—and do so from thousands of kilometers away.

Zitat:Emad: Iran’s New Ballistic Missile Amid The Nuclear Deal – Analysis
By Debalina Ghoshal

Iran recently test-fired the ‘Emad’, a precision-guided medium-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile. The missile has a range of 1700 kms and a payload capacity of 750kgs. Any missile above a 500 kg payload is considered nuclear capable. Emad is liquid-fuelled but with improved accuracy and maneuverable re-entry vehicles for evading enemy defence systems. This improved accuracy is extremely important if Iran is to deliver a conventional payload. The missile is also reported to carry thrusters for course correction. Reports suggest that this missile is an improved version of the liquid-fuelled Shahab missiles.

The maneuverability is achieved by steering warheads that can perform last minute maneuvering even at the terminal phase. According to Iranian Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan, Emad is Iran’s first ever missile that can be guided and controlled until the missile hits the target. The missile’s survivability is enhanced by road mobility with the help of the Transporter Erector Launcher (TELs).

There have been reports that the Iranian Parliament has approved the nuclear deal with the US and that the deal has also been approved of by the Guardian Council of the Constitution. Ever since the deal was finalised in July 2015, Iranian hardliners have been apprehensive of the conventional arms embargo imposed on Iran – which also includes an embargo on the development of ballistic missiles.

Zitat:Iran tests another mid-range ballistic missile in breach of UN resolutions
By Jennifer Griffin, Lucas Tomlinson Published December 07, 2015 FoxNews.com

EXCLUSIVE: Iran has carried out a new medium range ballistic missile test in breach of two United Nations Security Council resolutions, a senior U.S. official told Fox News on Monday.

Western intelligence says the test was held Nov. 21 near Chabahar, a port city in southeast Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan Province near the border with Pakistan. The launch took place from a known missile test site along the Gulf of Oman.

The missile, known as a Ghadr-110, has a range of 1,800 – 2000 km, or 1200 miles, and is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The missile fired in November is an improved version of the Shahab 3, and is similar to the precision guided missile tested by Iran on Oct. 10, which elicited strong condemnation from members of the U.N. Security Council.

“The United States is deeply concerned about Iran's recent ballistic missile launch," Samantha Power, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., said in a statement after the last Iranian ballistic missile test in October.

"We lack enough space in our stockpiles to house our missiles," said General Hossein Salami, the Guards' deputy, as a row with the US over Iran's ballistic missile programme deepened.

"Hundreds of long tunnels are full of missiles ready to fly to protect your integrity, independence and freedom," he told worshippers in Tehran, promising to never "stop developing our defence deterrent".

@Shahab
Zitieren
Gute Frage.
