Rare rhenium from volcanos extracted

Moscow, Aug 17 - Russian scientists have suceeded in extracting rhenium, a rare metallic element used in jet engines and the production of unleaded gasoline, from erupting volcanos.

The scientists extracted nine grams of rhenium from disulfide, a gas that is spit out and settles on the slopes of the Kudryavyi volcano on an island in Russia's Far east.

Rhenium's high melting point makes it ideal for use in high-temperature alloys used in jet engines and for producing high-octane gasoline.

It was the last naturally occurring element to be discovered and was first found in Germany in 1925, according to the US geological survey.
