WASHINGTON Never has there been a financial rip-off of the magnitude of the UN oil-for-food scandal. At least $5 billion in kickbacks went from corrupt contractors - mainly French and Russian - into the pockets of Saddam Hussein and his thugs. Some went to pay off his protectors in foreign governments and media, and we may soon see how much stuck to the fingers of UN bureaucrats as well.

UNITED NATIONS (AP-CP) — Secretary General Kofi Annan fired one senior UN official and chastised his Canadian deputy today for failing to protect UN staff ahead of the Aug. 19 bombing of the organization's headquarters in Baghdad, which left 22 people dead, including two Canadians.

A third official was demoted.

Acting on the findings of a scathing report detailing mistakes made by several senior officials, Annan singled out Tun Myat of Myanmar, the UN security co-ordinator, who was asked to resign from the UN, and did so.
