Six Russian soldiers were killed and seven others wounded when unknown assailants opened fire on an armoured vehicle near the Chechen border, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported early on Friday.
The incident happened near the Caucasian republic of Ingushetia's border with the breakaway Chechnya when the troops were returning to their base after escorting a group of Russian soldiers to the Chechen border, local police officials said.
Police launched a search and combing operation in the nearby forests to nab the assailants, who managed to escape the scene, officials added.
It was not clear whether the attackers were Chechen rebels who continue to target Russian forces despite Moscow's assurances that the separatist insurgency, which flared up in October 1999, had been put down.
