The Current Status of the F-35, in Three Charts
The F-35 is a complicated program.
That’s not really news, I know. Technologically, the jet may be the most advanced piece of hardware the military has ever played with, requiring millions of lines of code and all sorts of gadgets spread over three physically different models. Economically, it’s a Frankenstein’s monster of a program, with a trio of Pentagon services, eight partner nations who each have an economic hand in the program, and three foreign sales customers.
(Incidentally, if you want a remind on just who the international partners are, you can always check out our interactive map of the F-35 global footprint.)....

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The U.S. Defense Department official in charge of the F-35 fighter jet program said he hopes to have a fix in place for a defective engine part by the end of the year.
Speaking Monday at the Air Force Association’s annual conference, Air Force Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan said engine-maker Pratt & Whitney, part of United Technologies Corp., is developing a replacement component for the fan section of the F135 engine.
“We’re hoping before the end of the year, we’ll have at least the prototype,” he told reporters after a presentation on the acquisition program. “If the prototype works, we’ll put that in.”....

Fighter jets can't hide forever, but that's old news
A Russian military expert has sounded a seemingly dire warning for the United States. Dr. Igor Sutyagin claims that stealthy fighter jets and bombers can’t stay hidden much longer as enemy radar technology improves.
The U.S. military is betting hundreds of billions of dollars—in essence, its whole air-power investment—that detection-dodging stealth works … and will keep working for many decades to come....
