Zitat:WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- The Pentagon said on Monday that the United States has no immediate plan to send more troops to Liberia to assist with peacekeeping or humanitarian relief.

The mission of the US forces in Liberia remains as it was described by US President George W. Bush in late July -- to support the West African peacekeeping forces there, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said.

Three US warships, including a helicopter carrier, moved withinsight of the capital of Liberia, Monrovia, on Monday, and a US military liaison team arrived in the city last week to help coordinate logistics support.

Also on Monday, State Department deputy spokesman Philip Reekersaid the top priority was to ease Liberia's humanitarian crisis. "The key issue now is humanitarian aid and delivery of humanitarianaid," he said.

Reeker said the United States welcomes the resignation and departure of Liberian President Charles Taylor.

"The resignation and departure from Liberia of Taylor are essential to restoring peace in Liberia," he said. Enditem
