(...)Pakistan reportedly started negotiating to buy the Erieye airborne radar system from Ericsson Microwave Systems, a subsidiary of Swedish telecom equipment giant Ericsson, back in the mid-1990s. Due to tensions with neighbouring India however, the deal was put on ice.
“We like Erieye. It meets our needs,” Musharraf said and added Islamabad might be interested in purchasing Swedish Saab’s JAS Gripen fighter planes.
“Pakistan is looking for a high-tech aircraft. Gripen is one of several alternatives,” Musharraf said.
Persson however tried to downplay discussions surrounding the Gripen fighters. “There are no discussions about Gripen now. Musharraf mentioned Pakistan’s interest, but we quickly moved past (the issue). We have strict laws on weapon exports,” he added. (...)
