The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is actively considering plans to induct 60 state-of-the-art Gripen (JAS-39) fighter aircraft.
If the Pakistan government and manufacturers, Gripen International, a conglomeration of Saab AB and BAE Systems, sign on the dotted line, the deal is expected to cost the national exchequer about Rs.156.6 billion, reports The News.
Each of these combat aircraft is priced at 45 million dollars or Rs.2.61 billion and their final delivery to the PAF is expected within three years.
The Gripen is a frontline multi-role, swing-role aircraft, and is considered a match for any sophisticated fourth-generation combat aircraft. Having a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system powered by Volvo RM12 engine, Gripen can attain a maximum speed of Mach 2. The aircraft has a digital fly-by-wire flight control system, which further enhances its manoeuvrability.
The PAF and Saab Scania have already negotiated the deal. A final agreement between the Pakistan government and Gripen International is likely at the end of month, as the Saab AB wants the Swedish Government to approve the sale.
