WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Africa, including Arab League states, could be the next market for U.S. private military contractors.
Officials said the Defense Department has been examining the use of PMCs in the U.S.-led war against Al Qaida and related groups. They said PMCs could help in stability and peace-keeping operations in such places as Sudan's Darfour province.
"There is a role for private military contractors in attempting to bring stability to Africa," House Africa subcommittee chairman Ed Royce said. "Many parts of Africa are in crisis, and we need to stretch our thinking."
Officials said PMCs might be tapped to supply logistical services, training, removal of landmines and other tasks in North Africa. They said PMCs were currently operating in Djibouti and Sudan and could enter Mauritania.
