MOSCOW [MENL] -- Russia has focused on marketing an advanced fire control system for the T-72 main battle tank upgrade for prospective clients in the Middle East.
The T-72M1 upgrade marketed by Rosoboronexport includes an improvement in armor, firepower and new anti-tank missiles. Allies of the former Soviet Union such as Algeria, Libya, Syria as well as Iran have T-72 fleets.
But Rosoboronexport has focused its marketing campaign on the fire control system. The FCS has been described as enabling the T-72 to destroy armored vehicles, land targets and such low-altitude air attack targets as helicopters.
The FCS has been termed as the most advanced system by Russia's defense industry. It contains a day-night multi-channel thermal sight and gun layer's guidance unit. The former main sight has been maintained in the upgraded version as a backup system. The gun layer's multi-channel sight has been termed the "Sosna-U."
