Taiwan seeks to buy PAC-3 weaponry amid sovereignty row with China

Purchasing PAC-3 anti-missile weapons is Taiwan's top military priority, a senior general said Wednesday amid rising tensions with rival China after President Chen Shui-bian said he planned to hold a referendum on the island's sovereignty.

Vice defense minister and army lieutenant general Chen Ti-tuan told parliament that China's huge submarine fleet and ballistic missiles posed the biggest military threat to Taiwan.

"In the face of the growing missile threat from China, on the one hand we need to build up a comprehensive anti-missile system aimed at reducing possible havocs that may be inflicted by the ballistic missiles," Chen told parliament.(...)
