A main opposition deputy yesterday called on prosecutors to take legal action against an Islamist website that attacks the present and former presidents in the run-up to May's elections.
Republican People's Party (CHP) Denizli Deputy Mustafa Gazalci said that website <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.habervakti.com">www.habervakti.com</a><!-- w --> opens with the message: "Are you aware of the great opportunity?" It continues to say, "Patience ... There are a few days left to March 16. Our country will be saved from these prohibitors and junta members." Beside the sentences are pictures of former President Kenan Evren, who led the 1980 military coup, former President Suleyman Demirel and President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.
The site also includes a picture of daily Cumhuriyet struck out by a red cross and the same clock it used in a recent campaign. The message attacks an advertisement by the daily that shows a clock running backwards and says, "On May 16 the clocks will be set 100 years back. Are you aware of the danger? Own your Republic!"
