ANKARA - Turkish Daily News
Murad Bayar, head of the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM), said the Attack/Tactical Reconnaissance Helicopter (ATAK) project would be discussed and finalized at this month's Defense Industry Executive Committee meeting.
He said they wanted to finalize the project as soon as possible, noting that the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) project would also be on the meeting's agenda. Bayar stressed the importance of the JSF project and added that it and other projects would be discussed at this month's meeting but that their priority was to finalize the ATAK project.
A project to produce a domestically made tank is also moving forward. We will present that project at the next meeting in January. It will be finalized then, confirmed Bayar.
We are in addition working on a project that aims to produce a domestically manufactured battleship. We may present the battleship's main engine system issue at the meeting in January.
Integration of the defense sector:
Preparations for the main contract for Defense Technologies Holding Ltd., which will unite the sector under a single roof, were continuing, said Bayar, noting that their efforts would intensify in the coming months. The process is aimed at making the sector more internationally competitive, he said.
Bayar said they had been investing more money in research and development projects linked to the defense sector as of late, noting that they were making important progress on the matter. We have submitted $2 billion worth of R&D projects to the local sector in the past five years. The boats we developed for the coast guard are now being exported to other countries.
He said they would be concentrating on the latest technology in all their projects. We have been conducting work on a robust satellite infrastructure in Turkey. We will release an international tender to procure the observation satellites that the Turkish Armed Forces needs, Bayar said, adding: There is also a satellite that the TUSAŞ Aerospace Industries (TAİ) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) will jointly manufacture. This will be a satellite designed and produced in Turkey.
He went on to explain that the military's need for a strong satellite infrastructure would soon be addressed and that the procurement authorities were currently concentrating on concentrating on observation satellites. While we will procure observation satellites for the military through international tenders, we will also be awarding certain sub-projects to local companies, Bayar noted.
He added that within the next two decades Turkey would have a robust satellite infrastructure consisting of communication, observation, warning, optic and radar satellites.
