Syrian intelligence chiefs told Lebanese legislators to extend the term of the pro-Syrian president, Émile Lahoud, in 2004 and warned them that failure to do so would "put their personal security at risk," according to a new United Nations Security Council report.
Lahoud was to have finished his six- year term in November 2004, at a time when Syria feared diminution of its power over Lebanese politics. But two months before that, the Lebanese Parliament changed the Constitution to allow him to remain in power another three years.
The report also says Rafik Hariri, a former Lebanese prime minister, told legislators that the Syrian authorities had threatened to kill him if the move to keep Lahoud in office was not passed.
