BELGRADE, KRAGUJEVAC -- Tuesday – According to B92’s sources, the Serbia-Montenegro Defence Ministry will not be able to back out of the 45 million dollar agreement for renting satellite systems from Israel.
The agreement signed with the Israeli Image Set company, which resulted in the dismissal of Defence Minister Prvoslav Davinic, must be followed through with, according to legal experts of the Defence Ministry. B92 has received unofficial information that the Ministry will suggest to buy various military equipment from the Israeli company instead of renting the satellite, which they apparently do not need.
The legal experts hired by the Defence Ministry said that taking the deal into international arbitration would be a difficult, expensive and long process, without assurances that Serbia-Montenegro would be able to get out of the agreement in the end. The Serbia-Montenegro military claims that weapons will not be bought, rather, electronic equipment needed to update the military’s communication system which was severely damaged as a result of years of not putting money into updating the technology and the 1999 NATO bombing.
However, officials of the national weapons industry claim that they have information that automatic rifles will also be purchased by the Serbia-Montenegro military. The are afraid that if the military does in fact go ahead and buy these so-called Tavor rifles, their industry will suffer and the new M21 automatic rifles that they are producing will become obsolete.
“This is not the first time that they are trying to bring this rifle in through the back door in order to arm our nation. There was an effort made to build parts for these rifles in the Zastava factories, but it was rejected because the price of doing so was too high.” Jugoslav Ristic of Zastava Weapons said.
