SEVASTOPOL, March 5 (RIA Novosti) - Sergei Ivanov, Russia's Defense Minister, highlights ample conjectures round the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet, stationed in Sevastopol, Ukraine. "The fleet will retain Sevastopol stationing. That's the Russian and Ukrainian stance alike," he stressed to the media.
As for another Black Sea Fleet base, in Russia's Novorossiisk, federal allocations to its construction make 900 million rubles, roughly US$30 million, even since this year's start. "We must build the base-we have to grant normal conditions to the ships that are there now," said the minister.
"More than that, we are planning, within the year, to update our [Black Sea] naval group. New vessels will be coming to Sevastopol and Novorossiisk alike," he added.
The minister reported a recent talk to Anatoli Gritsenko, his newly-appointed Ukrainian counterpart. "We agreed to meet in Moscow quite soon for negotiations on the entire range of bilateral military and military-technological partnership. Ukraine is very positive on the progress of partnership with Russia," he pointed out.
Mr. Ivanov is in Sevastopol to introduce to the Black Sea Fleet Alexander Tatarinov, its new commander.
Mr. Tatarinov's appearance is sure not to trigger off bad differences in the fleet, and will not drastically change its routine, reassured the minister as he offered the commander's background:
"He was Black Sea Fleet chief-of-staff for the previous seven years, and its second-in-command. He was coping fine-suffice it to mention the fleet's mounting activity of the previous years. Tatarinov was active in international partnership, too, in particular, with NATO."
