ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey has been testing missiles for combat ground platforms.
Turkish officials said the Land Forces Command has launched a program to test unspecified ground-based tactical missiles for combat units. The officials said the missiles have undergone field tests and would be considered for procurement in 2005.
Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul acknowledged that Turkey's military was testing missiles. But he would not provide details, saying the issue was classified.
Gonul said the missile tests were part of the military modernization project. He said the army has determined a series of requirements to wage a low-intensity conflict near the Iraqi border.
