His venue was a meeting of the 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference. His audience included kings, presidents, sheiks and emirs.
That gave Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad an incalculable opportunity to talk about a negotiated settlement to bring peace to the Middle East, the challenge of economic advancement in Islamic countries, and the costs of religious infighting in the Muslim world.
But in stitching his thoughts on these issues together with a poisonous spike of anti-Semitism, the outrageous Malaysian leader succeeded only in promoting the vicious kind of hatred on which terrorism thrives.
Claiming "Jews rule the world," and "get others to fight and die for them," he insinuated in effect that the overthrow of the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and the despotic Sadam Hussein in Iraq were orchestrated Jewish plots.
This wasn't Mohamad's first outburst against Jews, but this one won him a standing ovation from the leaders of the Islamic world.
As that applause echoes throughout Palestinian refugee camps, it can only serve the interests of those bent, not on peace, but on religious war against the Jews.

Zitat:Return to Wannsee

BERLIN -- Last night I played Schubert.
I put his String Quintet in C Major on the disc player in my room and went to sleep thinking, of all people, of Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia's prime minister. Across the lake from where I am writing, hidden in trees streaked with the colors of autumn, is the Wannsee villa where the Nazis in 1942 held a conference on how to dispose of Europe's remaining Jews. The stunning HBO movie "Conspiracy," re-creating the Wannsee Conference, ended with Adolf Eichmann playing the same inexpressibly lovely Schubert piece on the phonograph. Things have changed. We have gone from the phonograph to the disc player but as Mahathir shows, for too many people the thinking remains the same.
