TURKEY'S MILITARY WARNS OF MIDEAST THREATS


ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey's military, dismissing the government's policy to woo Ankara's neighbors, has warned of emerging threats in the Middle East.

Officials said the General Staff has assessed that the strategy of Prime Minister Recep Erdogan to normalize relations with Turkey's neighbors has largely failed. They said the biggest failure was Erdogan's efforts to achieve security and economic cooperation with Iran.

Chief of Staff Gen. Hilmi Ozkok has agreed with this assessment. Ozkok has called for a new military strategy meant to counter Iran's intermediate-range missile and nuclear weapons threats.

"Old methods and strategies are obsolete," Ozkok told the War Academies Command on Oct. 4. "We must adopt new ones to tackle the new threats, which are spreading around the globe like viruses."
