Cleric supports targeting children

An extremist Islamic cleric based in Britain said yesterday that he would support hostage-taking at British schools if carried out by terrorists with a just cause.
Omar Bakri Mohammed, the spiritual leader of the extremist sect al-Muhajiroun, said that holding women and children hostage would be a reasonable course of action for a Muslim who has suffered under British rule.

He gave an interview yesterday to promote a "celebratory" conference in London next Saturday to commemorate the third anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Putin admits weakness as envoy arrives in Israel to open dialogue on terror

“There is a line connecting this weekend's mass murder in a school in North Ossetia, the ongoing genocide in Sudan, the bomb blasts on Madrid trains, the bombing of Istanbul synagogues and the suicide bombings in Be'er Sheva,” Ha’aretz journalist Ze’ev Schiff wrote in Sunday’s paper. “That line is Islamic - for the most part Arab - terrorism and it endangers world peace.”
In the post- 9/11 world, which still views Israel as a greater threat to global security than the concentration camps of North Korea or nuclear ambitions of Iran, the news that Arab jihadists made up at least 10 of the two dozen so-called Chechen freedom fighters that killed some 350 children, parents and teachers in a southern Russian school on Friday has caused something of an earthquake.

London Convention Will Celebrate 9/11

The London daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported that the extremist Islamic movement Al-Muhajiroun had announced a convention in London, titled "The Choice is in Your Hands: Either You're with the Muslims or with the Infidels," to mark the third anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The organization had planned a similar anniversary event a year ago, called "The Magnificent 19 [Suicide Attackers]," but had cancelled it at the last minute. Al-Muhajiroun leader Omar Bakri, a Syrian residing in London, told the paper by phone that the convention would feature Al-Qa'ida "surprises," with the screening of a never-before-shown video. He said that the convention will focus on "the anniversary of the division of the world into two great camps – the camp of faith and the camp of unbelief," and would take place September 11, 2004 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Bakri said that the convention will also feature a lecture about the Islamic religious roots of "slaughtering the infidels," that is, beheading foreigners in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and that there will be films by Al-Qa'ida, the Tawhid and Jihad organization, and the Brigades of the Two Holy Places in the Arabian Peninsula, and that there will also be a film on the most recent operations in Chechnya. He added that one of the speeches, by Abu Mus'ab Al-Zarqawi, known to be Al-Qa'ida's military commander in Iraq, will be translated.

Germany warns of major al-Qaida attack on U.S.

BERLIN — The leader of Germany's foreign intelligence agency warned Tuesday night of an increased likelihood of a major terror attack by al-Qaida in the weeks before the American presidential election.
"There is fear of a big attack on America by the terror organization al-Qaida before the presidential elections in November," August Hanning, director of the Federal Intelligence Service, said in a speech in Heidelberg, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported.

Events in Russia and Israel provide just one more sign of what the West faces from Islamic extremism. They provide an unfortunate reminder of the interest on the part of al Qaeda to bring mayhem to our nation during the election season of our own country.
That may or may not prove to be the case. Let us hope and pray it is not, but we must be prepared for whatever may come, something that the Russians and the Israelis know better than we do.

Soldier convicted of trying to give help to al-Qaida

FORT LEWIS, Wash. -- A National Guardsman accused of trying to give al-Qaida information about U.S. troops, including methods for killing soldiers, was found guilty Thursday on all five counts of trying to help the terrorist network.
The verdict in Spc. Ryan G. Anderson's court-martial, which began Monday, was announced late Thursday afternoon.
Anderson, a tank crewman whose 81st Armor Brigade unit is now in Iraq, was accused of trying to give terrorists information about U.S. troops' strength and tactics. The terrorists he thought he was meeting with were actually undercover federal agents, prosecutors said.
