Turkey’s procurement office has launched an in-country competition to buy four boats for search and rescue operations, a contract that industry sources put at around $350 million to $400 million.
The contract for Turkey’s Coast Guard originally was launched in 2001 by the Ministry of Defense as a co-production program, but was canceled later. Under the now-defunct program, local shipyards would have manufactured four boats under license from a foreign contender.
The new competition is exclusively for Turkish shipyards, according to the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, known in Turkish as Savunma Sanayi Mustesarligi (SSM), the civilian office that runs most of Turkey’s defense procurement programs.
An SSM official familiar with the program said that Turkish shipyards are fully capable of manufacturing the search-and-rescue boats.
“We believe they would not need foreign technology,” he said July 26.
Under the program, the Coast Guard will buy four boats, each weighing 2,000 tons.
SSM has asked the local shipyards to place bids no later than Jan. 5, 2005.
