FM spokesman:presence of foreign observers in Kazemi`s trial
against international laws

Tehran, July 14, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi
dismissed the remarks of Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham on
presence of Canadians during Zahra Kazemi`s trial as unacceptable and
said it is against all international laws and regulations.
He made the remarks Wednesday in response to the Tuesday`s
statements by Graham who had urged Tehran to reconsider its decision
to close to observers the trial of an accused of murdering the late
Kazemi.
Asefi stressed that the Iranian government in no way felt
obliged to have Canadian observers in the court hearing session.
"The case of Mrs Kazemi`s murder", the spokesman explained,
"is an internal issue" which is investigated by the Iranian
Judiciary.
The Iranian government is frank to make sure about holding of a
just trial by the Judiciary, he added.

Khatamistresses parliament`s role in a democratic society

Tehran, July 14, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said here
Wednesday that parliament is the most powerful body in a democratic
society, stressing other powers should be supervised by the Majlis.
Khatami made the remarks as he addressed the Majlis (Parliament)
during an open session in which he introduced Mohammad-Hossein
Sharif-Zadegan as the minister of the newly-established Ministry of
Welfare and Social Security.
"The issue of obtaining Majlis`s vote of confidence for an
executive official is among achievements of the Islamic Revolution.
"If we seek a dynamic and advanced society in which the Islamic
values are materialized, then justice should be observed," he said.
He added that Islam demands a broad-based justice, saying, "The
Islamic justice is not limited to economy. Freedom and human respect
will be meaningful within the framework of Islamic justice."
The president said human beings have always had concerns over the
issue of security, adding a secure society means having spiritual
and material security.
