GROZNY. June 20 (Interfax) - A total of 39,000 Chechen families will receive compensation in 2004 for their destroyed homes or lost property, Chechen Interior Minister Alu Alkhanov told Interfax on Sunday.
The Russian Interior Ministry, Finance Ministry and the other agencies concerned have developed regulations guaranteeing regular compensation payments, and a monthly payments schedule has been approved, Alkhanov said.
The use of the funds allocated for these purposes will be strictly controlled, the Chechen minister said. "I am confident that the recent reorganization of the committee in charge of compensation payments and the subsequent major reshuffling will have a positive effect on this process," he said.
The transparency of the commission's operations and broad public control will help avoid abuses. "We have already opened criminal cases on illegal payments. I am confident that the number of such cases will be brought to a minimum," Alkhanov said.
