Ministry revokes Omnipol's licence to sell radars to China

PRAGUE- The Industry and Trade Ministry has decided to revoke Czech company Omnipol's licence to export Vera radars to China, Czech Television (CT) reported.
The ministry granted Omnipol the licence to export six radars in January.

The Czech government last week decided to cancel the sale of the advanced Vera radar system to China because it is not in the Czech Republic's foreign political interest.
Industry Minister Milan Urban met the Chinese ambassador today and said after the meeting that the Chinese side did not raise the issue of Vera radar, CT said.
"The Chinese side cares about our mutual business relations, and by not mentioning Vera radars they have indicated a lot," Urban said. The Chinese side refused to comment on the meeting.
The Defence Ministry wants Vera radars to be produced and a new buyer to be found.
"Some countries have suggested that they would be interested. At the moment, let's say exchange of information is under way," Defence Ministry spokesman Ladislav Sticha said.
"It is our utmost effort that Vera heads for countries that are our allies," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Vit Kolar.
The plan to export Veras to China was opposed by the USA, fearing that the radars could detect U.S. ships and aircraft operating near Taiwan, as well as by some Czech politicians.
