Shamkhani meets his Polish counterpart
Tehran, April 16, IRNA -- Iran`s Minister of Defense and Armed Forces
Logistics Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani heading a high-ranking defense
delegation to Warsaw met his Polish counterpart Jerzy Szmajdzinski
to discuss issues of bilateral interest.
Shamkhani referred to exchange of meetings between the security
and defense authorities of the two states and said that the practical
steps taken in this respect marked the will of high-ranking officials
from both sides to promote relations.
He said that Iran-Poland relations serve as a model for two major
states from the Middle East and Central Europe.
The minister said that Poland`s membership in EU could have
significant impact on mutual ties.
Meanwhile, Shamkhani on Thursday held talks with the Polish
President Aleksander Kwasniewski on methods of bolstering relations.
In the meeting, President Kwasniewski referred to numerous fields
of cooperation on the national, regional and international levels and
the decisive role of exchange of views between Iran and Poland as well
as their effective assistance to draw up a strategy for reinforcing
security in Iraq.
The president also pointed to joint campaign against terrorism as
one of the pivotal and impressing issues in regional cooperation.
Turning to the focal role of Iran and Poland in the Middle East
and Central Europe respectively, Shamkhani called for expansion of
political, economic and defense cooperation between the two states.
Shamkhani also met Polish Minister of National Defense Jerzy
Szmajdzinski on Thursday to discuss defense matters.
The visit, the first by an Iranian defense minister to the East
European state since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979,
was in response to the visit of Polish Minister of National Defense to
Iran last year.
Shamkhani also had meetings with the Polish deputy prime minister
and interior minister.
Shamkhani also met Secretary of the Polish Supreme National
Security Council (SNSC) Mark Schwitz on Thursday to discuss mutual
relations on security and defense issues on regional and international
levels.
For his part, Schwitz extended an official invitation to his
Iranian counterpart Hassan Rowhani to visit Poland and called for
continuous dialogue between the officials of the two countries for
adopting measures to establish regional peace and security.
The two officials also focused on the situation in Iraq and the
serious threats currently facing its sustainable security.
At the end of Shamkhani`s visit to Poland, a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) on defense, military and technical cooperation
was inked between the two sides.
The minister and his entourage, who arrived in the Polish capital
city of Warsaw on Wednesday for a two-day visit, also toured the
Polish naval base at the Port of Gdansk.
