The MBDA-led team leading one of two European hypersonic interceptor efforts is poised to settle on its preferred configuration within weeks to set the stage for a competition against the rival concept later this year.
The final concept review for the Hypersonic Defense Interceptor System (HYDIS2) is due in May, a program official said. MBDA and its partners began the project exploring various options, first narrowing it to four approaches and more recently to two.
The selection would come ahead of the European Union launching a competition to likely choose a single hypersonic interceptor program to take forward. The European Union in 2023 awarded the HYDEF program to a Sener-led group before awarding the HYDIS2 contract. The two teams spent much of last year discussing whether the efforts could be combined, but failed to reach an agreement, setting the stage for the competition.
The coming assessment phase will likely run about two years, before the program would move on toward flight trials.
The HYDIS2 effort builds around MBDA’s Aquila high-altitude interceptor designed to be able to engage hypersonic glide vehicles, medium-range ballistic missiles and hypersonic cruise missiles.
The MBDA team gathered April 16 in France to help prepare for the concept downselect. “The interceptor concepts' architectures, and the weapon systems main elements supporting it, are well identified and evaluated,” the company said.
The three-stage interceptor that is being designed to fit into Mk. 41 vertical launchers or similar systems. It would likely feature an electro-optical seeker, potentially complemented by a radio-frequency sensor, as well as feature a kill vehicle with reaction control systems.
