Senior Turkish foreign ministry officials briefed lawmakers this week on multiple scenarios involving Iran. According to participants, Ankara is prepared to take extraordinary measures to manage any potential migration before it reaches Turkish territory.

One participant said officials explicitly referred to a “buffer zone” on the Iranian side of the border as part of Türkiye’s preparations. Another source said the term was not directly used but confirmed that officials signalled a willingness to go beyond standard border controls.

“They believe everything possible should be done on the Iranian side to ensure that those who might flee remain there,” one source told Middle East Eye.
