Zitat:US announces USD 11 billion military sales package for Taiwan

he US government has announced new military sales worth USD11.15 billion for Taiwan, representing the largest US weapons package for the island.

The Foreign Military Sales (FMS) tranche was announced by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 17 December and covers eight proposed deals. The sales package comes amid heightening tensions between Taiwan and China and a stated requirement by the island to allocate new ‘special' funding – worth about USD40 billion – to bolster its defensive capabilities. [...]

According to DSCA, the new deals feature 82 M142 High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARSs) worth USD4.05 billion, 60 M109A7 155 mm self-propelled howitzers (USD4.03 billion), and a tactical mission network (USD1.01 billion). They also include Altius tactical unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) from Anduril (USD1.1 billion), 1,050 Javelin FGM-148F missiles (USD375 million), TOW (tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided) missiles (USD353 million), spare parts for Taiwan's Bell AH-1W SuperCobra helicopters (USD96 million), and a support package for Harpoon anti-ship missiles.

DSCA said it has notified Congress about all the deals, which it said were requested by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO), Taiwan's de facto embassy in Washington, DC.

Commenting on the proposed contracts, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) said on 18 December that the new sales are “expected to take effect in one month” following Congress approval. The MND also confirmed that the deals are aligned with Taiwan's requirements under its new ‘special budget' for defence worth about TWD1.25 trillion (USD40 billion).
