Modular Autonomous Surface Craft

The MASC requirement is for three types of USVs, each defined by what they can carry rather than traditional ship dimensions. The standard model must support 2 40-foot equivalent (FEU) containers, each weighing 36.3 tonnes and drawing up to 75 kW of power, and be capable of travelling at least 2,500 nautical miles at a sustained speed of 25 knots while operating in Sea State 4 (moderate seas with wave heights up to 2.5m).
A larger version is expected to accommodate 4 FEU containers, with each module consuming up to 50 kW, and performance optimised for speed and endurance. At the smaller end of the scale, a single-container variant is designed to carry one TEU container unit weighing 24 tonnes and drawing 75 kW, with a clear run aft from the container to the stern, hinting at ASW capability. Across the 3 types, the emphasis is on modularity, rapid production, and the ability to integrate containerised capabilities for autonomous deployment (a parallel to the RN’s PODS concept).
