TURKEY'S MILITARY EXAMINES LEOPARD-2
ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey's military plans to launch an examination of the feasibility in procuring surplus Leopard-2 main battle tanks from Germany.
Turkish military sources said the General Staff and the Defense Ministry have been encouraged by German government interest to sell Ankara's military at least 200 surplus Leopard-2 tanks. The sources said such a deal could be completed in late 2004 after the European Union decides to grant a date for Turkish accession to the EU.
The Turkish Land Forces Command has examined the prospect of renewing a multi-billion dollar tender to procure a main battle tank. The sources said the command plans to launch a feasiblity study and draft recommendations for Turkish tank requirements in early 2004.
In January, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer held three of talks with Turkish leaders in Ankara. Fischer pledged to improve German-Turkish relations and help Ankara enter the EU.
