OCCAR delivers the 10th FREMM frigate to the Italian Navy

OCCAR has officially delivered the 10th Italian FREMM frigate, the “Emilio Bianchi” to the Marina Militare, the Italian Navy. The ceremony at the Muggiano shipyard (La Spezia) was attended by the OCCAR-EA Director, Mr. Joachim Sucker, the Italian Programme Committee Representative Vice Admiral Giuseppe Abbamonte, Director of the Italian Naval Directorate, the Vice Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, the Admiral Flavio Biaggi, Commander of the IT Navy Northern Maritime Interregional Command and Chairman of the Q&A Committee. Industry was represented by the CEO of ORIZZONTE SISTEMI NAVALI S.p.A., Eng. Giovanni Sorrentino, and senior managers from FINCANTIERI and Leonardo.

The ITS Emilio Bianchi marks a historic milestone as it is the last “Legacy” FREMM frigate delivered to the Italian Navy, and the second unit featuring the “Anti-Submarine-Warfare-enhanced” version. With this delivery, OCCAR completes the original FREMM programme phase, under which Italy has now received all ten FREMM ships.

Ich muss sagen, dass die italienische Marine sich sehr interessant entwickelt hat. Sie verfügt über...

- zwei 30.000/35.000-Tonnen-LHDs bzw. Helikopterträger/Flugzeugträger,
- drei ältere LPDs (die aber in den kommenden Jahren durch drei 16.000-Tonnen-Neubauten ersetzt werden sollen)
- zwei AAW-Zerstörer der Orizzonte-Klasse (plus einen dritten, der aber mittlerweile etwas überaltert ist),
- zehn FREMMs (die alle zwischen 2013 und 2025 in Dienst genommen wurden, zwei weitere sind geordert),
- vier OPVs (eigentlich Fregatten) der Thaon di Revel-Klasse, die alle in den letzten vier Jahren gebaut wurden (plus drei bestellte Einheiten),
- ein halbes Dutzend weiterer, kleinerer OPVs,
- acht U-Boote

Wenn man bedenkt, dass die Thaon di Revels und die FREMMs, also insgesamt 14 Schiffe mit 5.000 bis 6.700 Tonnen, innerhalb von zehn, zwölf Jahren gebaut wurden und dass diese - selbst die OPVs - brav ihre VLS mitführen, so ist dies durchaus bemerkenswert, wie schnell und gezielt die Italiener hier vorgehen. Da wird man beinahe etwas neidisch...
