In order to increase the operational capability of the war units, the government has decided to procure air defense equipment for five air defense companies for the Swedish army's brigades and battle group Gotland.
One of the key lessons from the Russian offensive war against Ukraine is the great need for air defense capabilities. Based on the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration's assignment, a German authority has today signed an agreement with the German company Diehl to procure seven medium-range air defense systems in the form of IRIS-T SLM (Surface-Launched Medium-range) on behalf of Sweden. The cost amounts to approximately SEK 9 billion.
An IRIS-T SLM consists of a vehicle with radar, a command and control system for airspace surveillance and targeting, two launchers with robots, and a support system with vehicles for loading, spare parts and maintenance. The order consists of 49 vehicles in total.
The air defense system is among the most modern and effective systems on the market and protects against threats such as unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, fighter jets and cruise missiles. The system is used by Ukraine and works very effectively in the defense of Ukrainian airspace. In addition to Ukraine, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia and Bulgaria also have the system.
IRIS-T SLM will complement our other air defense systems such as Patriot, IRIS-T SLS and Robot 70. Deliveries will begin in 2028.
